Harry the Vampire Slayer

I finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince over the weekend. I cried through the last 100 pages or so.

SPOILER WARNING
If you haven't read the book, you may want to stop here.

I have to admit that I am a geek since I did watch all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It seems that there are a lot of similarities between the story lines in Harry Potter and in Buffy. Perhaps JK Rowling was a fan of the TV series.

Buffy vs. Harry

The biggest similarity is that Buffy and Harry are both called The Chosen One. They are both students at rather dangerous high schools, where vampires, werewolves and other magical creatures lurk. Both wield wooden sticks as their weapon of choice. While not the best student their respective classes, they are leaders of their "Scooby Gang." Buffy and Harry are also involved with prophesies about fighting to the death. Buffy did die fighting the Master, albeit only for a little bit. Lastly, there were seven seasons of Buffy and there will be seven Harry Potter books. Coincidence? Hmm...

The Scooby Gang

There are a lot of similarities in supporting characters of Buffy's and Harry's respective groups. Both the stories include the following characters:

The somewhat dim, but fiercely loyal sidekick (Xander vs. Ron)

The smartest girl in the class (Willow vs. Hermione)

The academic father figure (Giles vs. Dumbledore)

The rich, snobby school nemesis (Cordelia vs. Draco)

The dark nemesis (The Master vs. Voldemort)

Predictions

Given these similarities, here are some of my guesses for what may happen to Harry in book seven.

  • Harry's girlfriend turns to the dark side and Harry kills her in order to save humanity. Unable to face the rest of the Scoobies afterwards, Harry runs away from Hogwarts. He then winds up working as a short order cook in a diner outside downtown LA.
  • The new headmaster will attempt to transform him/her-self into a demon and thereby bring forth an apocalypse. Harry will rally all the Hogwarts students to fight back at their graduation. The students blow up Hogwarts to kill the demon, but all the Scoobies manage to survive.
  • Harry magically gets a little brother, who just happens to be a mystical key for unleashing the destruction of the universe. Harry will sacrifice himself to save his brother and the rest of humanity.
  • Harry will tap into the power of a magical axe to create an army of Chosen Ones to take on Voldemort and his minions.
